That's if you see no issues with the whole concept of basic economy. Because this new PE fare with seat assignment fees is straight from the basic economy playbook.
It does not appear that EVA lowered the cheapest PE fare to correspond with rolling out this new fee. I've been flying on EVA to the same 2-3 destinations at similar times of the year for a while now. Prices have been more or less similar year after year on the cheapest Elite/PE fares. And now the fares have not gone donedown, but now the lowest PE fare simply has more fees attached.
