Theres also the whole we got you to Canada ... so does your onward issue get covered if not on an EU airline. That’s a grey area too.
Just ensure you aren’t on the last flight of the day and check travel insurance. Is my two cents. EC261 is a nice bonus IF feasible and screwed up.
Brexit makes no effect as EU261 has also been enshrined into UK law.
In regards to we got you to Canada, its pretty black and white i have had no issues whatsoever, as the only BA connections to YYZ will be the last WS flight of the day, if the flight makes you late enough to fall below MCT, the airline has no choice but to pay out.
I've missed a few times but nothing can be done due to the schedules, however i get my EU261 (with the exception of weather) and hotel (even for weather related).
Never had to contact insurance on a flight to Canada, BA even pays for hotel, however flying from Canada to the UK, i have (when the first leg was WS).
