Now that I'm Explorist I expect it to be the same. If I see a better room available I will ask, and if it is important to me, demand if necessary. So far as Explorist I have only stayed on a Prive rate, so the upgrade was pre-confirmed, but I have an all-pts staying coming up at Andaz Tokyo, so I may be testing this (except there is a good chance that the hotel will be sold out).

Unless it is not important to you on a particular stay, I would encourage all Explorists to ask about upgrading at checkin, and demand if it is important (assuming you see availability). This is a clearly stated benefit.
We have an upcoming stay at GH PDC booked a few award nights and then some prive nights. Two rooms. I’m not sure how they will handle the upgrade since we would have to change rooms if it’s a preconfirmed upgrade for the prive rate. I wonder if I should email the property directly to ask. Having an ocean view room would be nice. At Hyatt and Marriott we’ve occasionally been upgraded to a two bedroom suite when we had two rooms.
