Your alternative is 100,000 Avios and $111.22 in taxes and fees. So, the net cost of buying the ticket is only $554. And you earn some Avios or AAdvantage miles.

My thinking was that 100,000 Avios is a bit steep for economy even if it's a 14 hour flight to SYD. Another issue is how cheap airfare is to SYD from SFO. I suppose if the cash fare was closer to US$1000, I wouldn't be asking this question.
