Regardless of status, sometimes I pay. My next month's transcon is a paid F ticket and I've purchased TATL tickets in biz class. Upgrades are a crap shoot, even with miles, much less comp ones. If it is 3 hours or less of a flight, I won't pay unless the difference is minimal like $100.
