What's your intended routing? It's very easy to call the DM line and say, "Hi, I'd like to know if there is availability to clear a GUC on the following flight/ or on a city pair/ etc." If they say yes, book the flights, then have the agent process.
Since you're new to GUCs, have you already selected them as a DM benefit? They have a 1 year shelf life from date of selection as a choice benefit. If you haven't, it's takes a few hours for them to appear after you select them, but it's at least all within the 24 hour cancel period to cancel if your plan doesn't work out.
