A lot of airlines can get you UK to Aust. Just looking at SYD as the destination & LHR as the origin restricts you options. Look at other UK airports (LGW, MAN, EDI, CWL, etc) and BNE MEL. Ex EU (Olso or ??) on QR may show something in a better class (not economy).
Both QF & BA fly via SIN. SIN to Aust are many airlines to a range of airports [BA, QF SQ, Scoot, MH (KUL), CX (HKG)]
Outbound mid/late Dec and on the return in early/mid Jan 1000's of Aussies & Kiwis living in UK/EU go home for a Christmas/New year break. And then their are UK people visiting family living in Au/NZ. These people look early and book the cheapest fares.

Mwenenzi - some good stuff there, many thanks. Not tied to One World, will be generating Avios via American Express and have a good number stored already - not enough for this trip. Could flex times to to avoid that summer exodus - this is start of retirement, world is my lobster. Actually planning 3 months in NZ, just figured Sydney was best stepping off as not expensive Syd to NZ. Will do some time in Oz too.
