There is no "transit" concept for USA airports. As an arriving passenger from outside the USA, you will have to do USA customs and immigration at EWR. You will then exit outside security and then will need to do security to get airside. There is no fast track for doing that.

If you don't have GE, get the "mobile passport" app on your phone.

If you are going to travel by air, it is best to get GE/PreCheck
without it, your connection (85 minutes) is going to be challenging.
