I'm curious how prevalent this is. As mentioned in my original post, I'm not sure I've ever seen this before, on thousands of domestic flights. I'm not at all saying it doesn't happen, but I suspect that the overbooking is focused on specific routes or even flights. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone with good info on this topic.
