Like others have said, its been that way for years. When CLT used to be my home base, I always bought separate tickets to JFK for TATL flights. Simple lack of competition. As a business, AA has no incentive to lower prices.
I typically do the same. Head up the day before, then fly out of JFK, usually for about half the price. Saved about $1k last time vs going from CLT.
I find it frustrating how expensive it can be out of CLT, particularly when comparing it to RDU, CAE, GSO connecting through CLT.
