IMHO, it is just over zealous and careless agent.
I had it happen once yet the agent alerted it to me in the denial email. He mentioned at the end that he changed my rate so that I could enjoy the lowest possible rate on Marriott.com.
It was a prepay rate and I cancelled it right after I saw it.
