I tried something similar when I got to ORD yesterday. (tried to skip CLT and go straight from ORD to my final destination. The Admirals Club told me a $200 change fee + fare difference would be required since CLT wasn't on the list. I asked her to look at how things were going in CLT. She told me that it didn't matter, as OPS hadn't placed CLT on the list. Got to CLT, and managed to get ticketed for 3 diff flights to my destination. All of my flights were delayed and showing departure times within 15 mins of each other at that point. The good news is, I made it home within 3 hours of my scheduled time.
