I was the same- and chasing status meant stopping purchasing of basic/standard fares which simply don't give enough AQM, and also harder to upgrade from those tickets.
Not sure at all about other carriers and I never really thought about that- whether there is a big difference (price wise) in getting *G from AC vs other carriers (and being based in Canada).
