One other recommendation - take a trip on the Penang Hill Railway, the spectacular views from the top (not to mention the cooler climate) are still etched in my mind eight months after the visit of my wife and I to Penang.
I second that, well worth a few hours, and an amazingly kitsch hindu temple on top also.
