Two questions:
1. Does anyone have experience using landside lounges upon arrival in Sydney and did it work?
2. The reason we are looking for landside is I am thinking we will need to pickup baggage. Is this done inside security or outside, as I am guessing I will need to go through customs. Or will I be able to collect bags and customs and then go to lounge?

You need to have a look at where the lounges are T1 International, T2 domestic VA & others or T3 domestic QF

Have a look at the wiki here-->Airport info SYDNEY (SYD) - amenities, transfers, transport

As SYD is your entry into Australia you must clear immigration & customs with all your checked & carry on baggage. You then end up landside (in a small, often congested, area). There are landside luggage storage places to the right. This is not in a "secured area"

Then at T1, you can up 1 level to any PP facilities land side (before security) [if any: not sure]

At T1 international you will not have access to the departure airside (after security) PP contracted facilities (mainly restaurants).

Or across to T2/T3 by the free bus. You do not need a boarding pass to access Australian domsetic airside areas. Just go through the security (minor by USA standards).

There are other threads on PP SYD facilities.
