I had the same issue, although there are two of us on my booking. Its happened before (using the mobile app) where i've been able to select my pre-assigned side seat, and select and drop the passenger to a middle seat which appears blocked, but it lets me place the passenger on it and save. Then it opened the lot up for me, was a bit strange.
