I agree. However nothing prevented them from introducing a card that will earn 8x on hotel spend instead of 6x (for example), and other high-spender perks like one free night after each $25k of spend or whatever. This is similar to what Hyatt did. Instead, Marriott introduced a new card which seems to trade quarters for a dollar.
