Questions for the Lurkers:

Annual elite status (how to earn, benefits, duration, etc.) starting in August 2018
  1. Will reward bookings still count towards night credit?

  2. Will night credit still be earned for booking up to 3 rooms?
  3. Will those who got Marriott Platinum via a status match (linked account) from SPG Platinum be switched to Platinum Elite or Platinum Premier Elite on August 1?

  4. If a member reaches 100 nights & not the $20k spend threshold then will they still receive the Your24 benefit?

  5. What are the details of the breakfast benefit? Is it continental or full breakfast (as a minimum)? Will Marriott properties which have a lounge that closes on the weekend still be allowed to offer no alternative breakfast benefit?

  6. Will Suite Nights continue to clear 5 days out or will they be confirmed at the time of booking?
  7. Can SNAs be used at all brands -- in particular, can they be used at Ritz-Carltons? If so, and if an SNA is used at a Ritz-Carlton to upgrade to a room category that includes club access or breakfast, will those features be honored despite those not being elite benefits at Ritz-Carltons?

  8. In the past SPG members had the option to get the Personal & Business Amex & get a maximum total of 10 nights elite credit towards the qualifying year. Will members be able to get more than 1 SPG or Marriott card & get more than 15 nights towards elite qualifying credit in the new program?
  9. Will those who got Marriott Gold via a status match (linked account) from SPG Gold (e.g. thru Amex Plat) be switched to Gold Elite or Platinum Elite on August 1?

  10. If one upgrades this year to the new Amex Premium Card will all of 2018 spend count for Platinum status?

  11. Will those who meet either the 75 or 100 night criteria before August 1st still be eligible for the Your24 & Ambassador benefit for the remainder of 2018 and for the 2019 year (even if they don't achieve the new 100 night or $20K spend requirement)?

  12. Will those who got Marriott Platinum via a status challenge this year (supposedly valid till Feb 2020) be switched to Platinum Elite or Platinum Premier Elite on August 1?

  13. Does Platinum status via a successful status challenge in 2018, which is supposedly valid till Feb 2020 (see Q10), remain in force throughout 2019, or will 2019 status now depend solely on actual nights stayed in 2018?

  14. Will SPG Platinum members still have lounge access at Sheraton/Le Meridien/Westin Resorts properties that have a lounge?

  15. I had 69 SPG nights last year and 10 Marriott nights, on August 1, will my status be Platinum Elite Premier recognizing my total stays?

Lifetime elite status (how to earn, benefits, etc.) starting in August 2018
  1. Will the SPG member be able to earn LT status based on the old program until 31-Dec-2018?

  2. If SPG member who has been 7 years Elite Gold/Platinum and the combine nights between SPG and MR more than 250 nights, does this mean the member will be LT Silver in the new program?

  3. If SPG member who has been 7 years Elite Gold/Platinum until 2018 and the combine nights is 200 nights and from 2019 onward he does not earn enough as Gold. Will he be LT Gold, when he reach combine night of 400 nights?

  4. Can you confirm the details of what types of years of status count toward the new Lifetime Platinum calculation? Years of SPG Platinum definitely count. Do years of old Marriott Gold (50 nights) count toward the new Lifetime Platinum Elite requirement? If so, does old Marriott/Ritz Gold earned through a Marriott credit card or Ritz-Carlton credit card count? If not, does old Marriott/Ritz Platinum earned through spending $75K on the Ritz-Carlton credit card count? Going forward will spending $75K in a year on the new Amex Premium card count as a year of earned Platinum status for the lifetime status requirement?

Redeeming points/legacy certs for award stays
  1. When will properties be mapped to the new award categories?
    • From Post 448, "We’ll share more information in the coming weeks regarding which Categories hotels will fall into in the new chart."
  2. How will availability for rooms booked with points be handled? Currently SPG members can book any available standard room with points if the hotel is not sold out. Marriott is highly capacity controlled. Are we going to the Marriott system? If so, how greatly will this devalue points? (I supposed the final part of my question is for other members, not the Lurkers.)

  3. Will the 5th night be free when redeeming points at any category now?

  4. Will C&P still be available? If so then when can we expect to see the new chart?

  5. How will existing Chase category-5 certificates be handled after the realignment of categories?
    • "Starting in August, any outstanding Certificates will be updated from Category-based to points-based values in the new combined redemption chart and may be used for stays at Rewards or SPG hotels up to the points value displayed on your updated Certificate." (Source: https://members.marriott.com/faq/#i-...a-after-august)

Miscellaneous program questions
  1. Will SPG or Marriott best rate guarantee terms be used in the combined program, particularly with respect to rate type?

  2. Will transfers from Amex MR maintain their existing 2:1 (future 2:3) for UK members, and 3:1 (future 1:1) for US members?

  3. Will members be able to transfer points to other members? If so, under what circumstances?

  4. Will we be able to keep our SPG acct number? Or will we be forced to use our Marriott Rewards number, after Aug 1st? Or... will we be issued an entirely new account number?

  5. What will be the points expiration policy in the new combined loyalty program? Will point purchases or other point transfer transactions count toward account activity if no account activity triggers points expiration?

Co-branded Chase and Amex cards
  1. Will Chase or Amex prorate the annual fee upon canceling a credit card due to the new changes?

  2. Will the ability to earn 1 elite night per $3K spent on the current Chase Marriott card remain available for people who continue to hold that card? (The card is being closed to new applicants when the new Chase Marriott is released on May 3, per TPG.)
  3. If the Starwood Amex annual fee is billed in the last week of July, the free night benefit won't be awarded until July 2019. Will Amex offer to add the equivalent in points as compensation?

Official announcement – See how our three loyalty programs will become one in August

There certainly has been a lot of chatter recently surrounding program changes. We finally can share more information, and we’re so excited for you to be among the first to hear what we have planned! Here’s the news you’ve been so curious about:

Starting this August, SPG®, Marriott Rewards® and The Ritz-Carlton Rewards® will become one program. Our names will stay the same until 2019, but we’ll consolidate everything else into one set of benefits to make things easier and provide more opportunities for you. More details can now be found at members.marriott.com, however here are some highlights starting in August:

Earn and redeem across the full collection of 6,500 hotels/29 brands — more hotels where you want to go.
  • Starting in August, you’ll earn 10 points per US$1 spent on eligible hotel charges (5 points per eligible US$1 at Element, Residence Inn and TownePlace Suites hotels. 2.5 points per eligible US$1 at Marriott Executive Apartments). Elite members earn even more with their bonuses.
  • For SPG members, your Starpoints balance will be multiplied by 3 in a one-time conversion in August.
  • The new consolidated free night Award Chart offers 8 Categories with off-peak, standard and peak pricing. Category 8, off-peak and peak won’t roll out until early 2019. Hotels slated for Category 8 will be in Category 7 until that point, offering a 25,000 points per night savings!
  • Over the next few days we will be adding examples of where hotels will fall within the new free night Award Chart. We’ll be sure to post again when this is live. In the meantime, you’ll be pleased to know that our move to one Award Chart offers even more value for your points, with more hotels moving down in redemption rates than up.
  • For free flights, you’ll be able to transfer points to more than 40 airlines, including new options. The new ratio will be 3 points for one mile.
  • Plus, we’ll add 15,000 points for every 60,000 points you transfer to airline miles, providing you with a total of 25,000 miles in the airline program of your choice.

Enjoy consistent Elite benefits and status recognition at all hotels across 29 brands.
  • The new Elite structure offers 5 Elite tiers and benefits.
  • Existing Elite members will continue to be Elite and will receive a new, but similar, tier level in August. You could also receive a higher Elite tier — based on your combined Rewards and SPG nights stayed at any of our 29 brands going back to January 1, 2018.
  • The new Lifetime structure offers 3 tiers and benefits.
  • If you’ve previously achieved Lifetime Elite status in Rewards or SPG, you will have that Lifetime Elite status in the new program. In addition, when you combine Rewards and SPG accounts, we will combine your lifetime activity across both toward Lifetime Elite status in August. And if you qualified for Elite status in both programs in the same year, it will count as 2 years toward Lifetime.

Simplify your experience — one account, profile, login, points balance and Elite-night balances.
  • So, if you have a SPG account and a Rewards account, you can combine them in August to consolidate your points, Elite nights and profile into one.

Seamlessly access everything through our websites and apps, and when you call Member Support.
  • For the first time you’ll be able to see your full account details and search for and book hotels across all 6,500 hotels whether you are using the SPG app or marriott.com.
Be sure to check out members.marriott.com to learn even more about what’s coming in August. There’s a lot more information there, including FAQs. As we lead up to August, we’ll continue to update the site. In the meantime, please feel free to comment here with questions and suggestions and we’ll do our best to answer all of them.

Looks like regular platinums lose 5 SNAs and Plat75s lose your24. Wow!

Credit card perks: New 450 year AF SPG Amex available that only comes with gold status, and plat after $75K annual spend. This is not enticing. Was hoping for this kind of card to either go directly into plat status or with a more reasonable annual spend.

it seems as though spg members can continue to qualify for SPG style benefits at least through august - maybe longer.
Does that mean if, for example, I hit 50 nights tomorrow, I get 10 suite night awards right now, or do I get 5 at 50 nights and 10 ant 75 nights per the new schedule?
Also, if I qualify with SPG stays with 100 nights do i get an ambasador, or does the 20k/year threshold count in this qualifying year already?

Definitely disappointing. The current RItz credit card does this, but the current 'gold' is obviously much more valuable.

I wonder about breakfast...I see no lounge access at resorts, but it does list a breakfast offer as a possible welcome amenity (says varies by brand). I wonder if this option will be included for resorts, St. Regis, and Ritz properties.

Guess's on what category 8 hotels with be? If they just turned st regis from 7 to 8 for 85k points and only give me 2pts per dollar. The card is going in the trash.

I just got one of the "open at 4:30 pm" boxes postcards.

Nothing new except the members website coming in August with a listing of the 29 brands.

Starpoints transferring over at 1:3, good. But, Amex SPG going forward will only earn 2x on non-bonus spend. Goodbye Amex SPG card.

Also, "Plus, starting in August, we’ll add 15,000 points for every 60,000 points you transfer to airline miles, providing you with a total of 25,000 miles in the airline program of your choice." Assuming I'm understanding this correctly, if I transfer 120,000 points, the bonus is capped at 25,000?
