Growing up in the midwest, I remember 'ham salad' and 'meat filling' which would better be described as beef salad - both sandwich fillings. Sandwiches in that place and time meant squishy white bread, some yellow mustard and if you wanted to get fancy, a 'leaf' of iceberg lettuce
