Neither assumption is completely absurd, but caveat emptor as they say; the OP clearly should have done more homework.
The OP proclaims themselves to be a frequent flyer and a long time Amex customer, yet apparently is totally ignorant of how Delta works, and how Amex rewards work. Dont get me wrong, its an issue that DL is showing flights that cant be booked but...definitely a 'look before you leap' moment. I dont really have any sympathy for people who dont know what they are doing, get burned, and open a account to post once with these stupid venting 'XYZ Company is horrible!' posts.
