I'm guessing that since you have UA status, you may have hundreds of thousands of miles banked, and it could take you many years, a decade even, to transfer the miles this way.
Instead, I suppose you could hold the miles for vacations and such where you are willing to drive to a farther airport, or make connections, to use your miles. Or send your friends and relatives around the world!
I think there are plenty of fair criticisms about mileage plans being devalued, but I don't think it's fair to complain about how much is lost trying to transfer miles between United and Delta...it's just silly.
