Wow, that does suck. Mileage awards have already been devalued so much, but this would be taking another 67% hit on top of that. I'm guessing that since you have UA status, you may have hundreds of thousands of miles banked, and it could take you many years, a decade even, to transfer the miles this way.
Instead, I suppose you could hold the miles for vacations and such where you are willing to drive to a farther airport, or make connections, to use your miles. Or send your friends and relatives around the world!
