this spec document it sounds like the "smart card" functionality is something completely different than credit/debit card acceptance. On the other hand, they do link to a Visa EMV PDF somewhere on their website.

They collaborated pretty closely with the major networks before coming out with Apple Pay, so it's not completely out of the question that they'd get enough such data to be able to claim such.
