Okay, so I guess I was wrong that there was a JFK-SYR nonstop, so that is problem #1 with the plan. It must have been DL I was thinking of. I wasn't sure the extra stopover (plural for AA) was
really worth it, but I figured I wouldn't rule it out until seeing the fares. Now I've seen some fares thanks to you good people and Jeez Louise, I can (nearly) fly J to Europe for the prices in the screenshots!

The routing codes for this would be "LAX JFK X?" (Meaning, connect in LAX, then JFK with no further connections) but submitting that shows only DL and AS options in Matrix because there is no non-stop AA flight from JFK-SYR. You could use codes: AA+ LAX JFK DCA and AA+ DCA JFK LAX for the return but those really, really terrible routes and prices out at 2786.00.

That's interesting. I guess they're protecting the premium seats because of fare differences - as best I can tell, Delta does this buy distinguishing between "First" and "Delta One".
