The time of day makes no difference as aircraft need to be deicde throughout the day, 18/03 was indeed a cold day and I would imagine it did need deicing. There were issues with deicing that day at LGW as they indeed ran out of the fluid. I was lucky enough that my flight to AMS was only delayed but there were many cancellations that day due to this problem. Now, whether this is extraordinary occurence or who is at fault, I don't know but the reason for the cancellation does seem plausible chatting to the pilot that flew me out of LGW that day. If I were you I would try CEDR but the answer might be no...
Was the last BFS of the day cancelled too? Did you not get chance to transfer to that one?
