Yes you have a good point but Marriott could of avoided most of this by having the new tiers start March 1 2019 because everyone's current tier benefits were expected to last until Feb 28 2019.
I agree with you there. The most logical switchover would have been to run out 2018 as is - except adding the ability to sum Marriott and SPG nights - and then give several months notice of what benefits will look like in 2019 and the criteria for reaching status.
But I suppose there are elements of implementation that simply wouldn't be convenient to do on January 1st during the holiday season...
