Since you've been in Vegas before, you're familiar with the location of the Stratosphere. The SLS is a block away from the Stratosphere. (Hint: very seedy location)
The SLS/W used to be the Sahara Hotel and Casino. Built in 1952. Room sizes and oddities are due to being built in the early 50s and doing cheap updates to the rooms rather than a total makeover including reducing the number of rooms (square footage of rooms is very small ... think 1950s).
While the Westin isn't great, it's miles better than SLS/W. Better yet, just stay at a property along the strip.
