Mileage ticket upgrade INTL business domestic economy

I bought a business class ticket for a relative using my miles from PEK - IAD - EWR; PEK-IAD was business while IAD -EWR was ticketed. Mileage redemption was 85K miles (like full business).

While not a big deal any tips to get the domestic leg upgraded as well perhaps at the gate? Is that possible?
