But if you really want walking distance - as stated above Gothic Quarter, but you will pay a premium I would suspect. Maybe just a bit further away is La Ribera. Still a good neighborhood and walking distance to the major sites.
I like the Four Points as well, tons of restaurants in walking distance and a bus that stops practically by the door (the metro is a short walk as mentioned but the bus system is great and sometimes more convenient). On the other side of the street you can take the bus in the other direction to get to Las Ramblas, etc. For me ideal combo of nice area for restaurants, etc and away from the huge crowds, but sooo easy to get to tourist spots.
