Where to stay in Barcelona?

Any recommendations on what area of Barcelona to stay in? Looking for many things in walking distance, and close to the metro, as well as safe without breaking the bank.

This is a fairly wide open question, but I'll take it that you likely want to stay near the Gothic Quarter (La Rambla).

We stayed at the H10 Cubik, and it was a very good combination of price, location and comfort. Staying near Placa Catalunya makes for convenient walks to the Gothic Quarter, La Ribera (El Born), and Eixample districts and metro. Not too far from La Sagrada Familia.

H10 is a Spanish hotel chain that has other hotels nearby as well. There are a fairly large number of hotels in the area, so an aggregator site like Booking.com may be a useful tool to check availability in the area. YMMV on the actual reviews, though.

With a metro pass, you can get almost anywhere in the city pretty quickly. I stayed at the Four Points Diagonal which was a quick 2 minute walk to a tram that took me directly to the beach. 8 minutes to the metro.
Also it seemed like lots of stuff to see everywhere in the city.
But if you really want walking distance - as stated above Gothic Quarter, but you will pay a premium I would suspect. Maybe just a bit further away is La Ribera. Still a good neighborhood and walking distance to the major sites.

East of Las Ramblas (which is the Gothic Quarter) is probably the best. Although, please be careful with going near Las Ramblas, especially at night. That is where people often get pickpocketed as well. Outside of there, I felt completely safe (even as a solo traveler) and never had any issues with people trying to approach me. The Liceu metro is a hotspot for pickpockets as well.

We stayed at the Lugaris Beach Hotel near Poblenou. It was walking distance to the Metro, right beside a busy bus stop, and the area was full of locals at night. Terrific hotel, BTW.

I like the Four Points as well, tons of restaurants in walking distance and a bus that stops practically by the door (the metro is a short walk as mentioned but the bus system is great and sometimes more convenient). On the other side of the street you can take the bus in the other direction to get to Las Ramblas, etc. For me ideal combo of nice area for restaurants, etc and away from the huge crowds, but sooo easy to get to tourist spots.
