We have a condo so can cook in and eat out when we want. One can take a short Uber ride once a day (restaurant/grocery store/beach) and spend less than what you'd spend on a rental car (based on a $30>$35 a day rental price).
We're only a mile, or so, from the center of Kona so cabs/Uber are less than $10 r/t. Also, Kona has a bus that runs up and down Ali'i drive each day.
May not like it but I think I'll give it a go.
