I was referring to main course. Delta has been saying they would allow pre-ordering of meals for like three years now. American has had it for years and, it seems anyways, it works just fine on American. Other airlines offer it as well. At the very minimum, Delta could offer a "beef," "pork," "salad" and "fish" option along with its existing special meals.
Delta could even make money by selling first-class meals to those seating in economy or comfort-plus. Some of the foreign airlines also customers in the back to buy premium meals at the time of booking.
