Yes it just depends on the credit limits for the onboard card reader. For a fact I know the card readers on KL are currently maxed out at EUR500. The last time I upgraded on board, the transaction was processed once we were in the air. It was for more than EUR500 so couldn't be put through the card reader. The purser went to the flightdeck to have the transaction approved with HQ via ACARS. Pretty sweet when she showed me the printout from the ACARS printer.
