I often add my KTN at the airport kiosk (sometimes less than an hour before departure) and have never been denied PreCheck. YMMV, of course; apparently there are different levels of Known Travelers ("well-known" vs. "somewhat known"?) and Global Entry is fairly high on that ranking.
