Do you ever NOT rent a car when visiting Maui or the Big Island?

We're toying with idea of NOT renting cars anymore when we take our annual 3 to 4 week trip to the islands (mostly the Big Island and Maui). My reasoning is that we've seen and done everything we've dreamed of and now we mostly relax, snorkel, do one whale watch trip, read and veg.

We could take Uber/Lyft from the airport to our condo and then a bus or Uber/Lyft for the occasional trip to the store or where ever. Car rental rates have increased quite a bit since we started traveling yrs ago. We've been paying ~$180-200/wk. the last few yrs. So a 3 wk. trip means $500-$600 in car rental fees. You can take a lot of cab/Uber/Lyft rides for less than that.

Is this "crazy talk" or have any of you done it? Looking for your thoughts.
