Mileage runs have never made sense to me, but I learned long ago that MRs are a YMMV.
My business+personal travel get me to about 50K each year on AS. I guess if I were close to either the Gold or 75K threshold, I'd consider visiting family or friends for a weekend. No way I'd spend 10-15 hours on a trip to nowhere. Again, YMMV.
