It's probably more common than you think on off-peak flights (Holidays, weekends, seasonality, time of departure, etc.) but if you travel primarily on peak flights, you won't realize it. I even had an MD88 flight in early fall (while traveling on Economy Basic fare) GPT-ATL with nobody in First.
Still surprises me. Would have figured they'd start giving FCM offers for $10 just to guarantee no elites got upgraded
