On one hand, I want to say that I've done 2 day trips to Asia from SFO with a friend, so the in-flight time is easily 1/3 of the total trip, and I want to spend it with them.
On the other hand, that's why we book seats beside each other in the same cabin.

I don't suspect the first two are faux pas on account that I could have easily been upgraded into F via CPU if luck was on my side.

Because you're eligible for a CPU you think you deserve to use the forward lavs?
If the path to your cabin's lav is not blocked, use that lav. Even if it's presently occupied. Some of us pay to not have a stream of elites in Y passing by us, standing in the aisle at our seats, pressing their large behinds into my seat (yes, this happened, and I had a word with an FA, who then told this person to lean against the closet instead of my face).
If the cart's in the way, that's a different matter
