The official policy in FA manuals is that higher ticketed class passengers may visit their traveling companions in other classes, so long as it does not interfere with service and it is discreet with no disruption to nearby passengers.

Bolding mine

It's easy to say that the curtain should be made of iron, or crossing should only be done in one direction (to the back). But the realities of modern day travel mean that quick judgement calls sometimes need to be made, and no human is ever going to get that 100% correct.

Also, your username and home airport ring a bell. If you're who I think you are, I think we've met briefly a few years ago at a collegiate event, and thanks for your website and humorous posts on PbN.

Within their own peer groups there is a lackadaisical attitude towards certain etiquette in a more formal situation. To them it is just a curtain, nothing more.

Of course I may overthink such things, but hopefully I'm not alone in my principles.
Passengers crossing the curtain is certainly something more prevalent on leisure routes, but I've known MP Elites to do it as well - both older and younger. The leisure non-frequent fliers usually apologize and head to the mid or rear lavs when corrected, leasing me to believe they might not have known better. The Elites, not so much.

In any case, you're certainly not alone. When my traveling party is split, I almost always ride in the back, and never go forward. We can be split for a few hours, it's not the end of the world.
