HA can thru-check the luggage on two separate HA tickets (they just won't thru-check on different airlines) so I think the transfer is not particularly risky. Just make sure you go to the counter and get check in and get both boarding passes at LIH and watch them tag the bags to SFO. If you are checked in for the OGG-SFO flight, HA will probably make sure you arrive before they leave... although it is still no guarantee and they are not obligated to accommodate you if something goes wrong since you are on two separate tickets.
You do need to put the bags thru US Mainland agriculture inspection at LIH. Normally for LIH-OGG flight you don't need to do the agriculture inspection. If there is no inspection stickers, the OGG ground handling may pull your bag out.
