If you do stay at the Ren, I have had some language barrier issues with cab drivers requiring them to make phone calls and pull into other hotels asking for directions. "Sukhumvit Road" (a very main street in Bangkok) is not in the official address, the signage and turnoff to the hotel driveway are on Sukhumvit, a few feet southeast of the Chit Lom BTS station and Erawan Shrine.
The Renaissance is located on Ploenchit Road. Sukhumvit becomes Ploenchit near the Ploenchit Center (next to the JW Marriott). As you note, the best landmark is Chitlom BTS
