They don't claw back. This is a known trick to redeem your points without paid travel. From what I've read even after you refund the ticket the charge will be available to redeem against till it expires.
wont claw back. i discovered this accidentally too when i had to alter travel plans and thus cancelled a hotel reservation (which took my first night charge as deposit). this first night charge remains eligible for A+ points redemption even after the refund posted back to the cc
