I ask for extra towels, but not extra pillows. On stays of more than one night, the extra towels are often there at check-in, but extras are never left after that. On nights two and beyond, it's back to a bath towel, a face towel and, if I'm lucky, a wash cloth.
If you haven't used your stash of extra towels on the first day, hide them in a closet or drawer so that the housekeepers don't remove them. Problem solved.
