Can you describe what happens when you are in a forum and select the "mark this forum read" option?
If you can, could you provide screenshots showing the subforum before you click "mark this forum read" and afterwards?

Edited to add: While "mark this forum read" within a given forum doesn't work, the "mark forums read" quick link does appear to mark all forums as read
