I don't know first hand, but I recall some messages a while back about people reporting that the website showed the ability to do what you say (book on a free night certificate) but then they weren't able to actually get it through to confirmed reservation.
At any rate, I wouldn't risk it. Even if you got it booked, you are subjecting yourself to getting an email/phone call saying your booking isn't legit and was cancelled.
