Edit: I should add that I always provide a tip. In Kampala, Uber is so absurdly cheap I sometimes tip at 100% if the service is good (my trip to the office is approx GBP 1.42 - same distance in the UK would be in excess of £10 - and Kampala isn't a cheap place to live).
I tip my hat to you sir for having the good sense to recognize cost vs. value.

It's not just Kampala or a third world city either.

In Orlando UberX and basic Lyft are $0.68 per mile. Now for all of the non tippers ask yourself... Would you driver your best friend through Disneyland mayhem for $0.68? Oh and BTW it's really only $0.51 per mile because Uber takes 25%.

You don't have to tip your Uber (UberX/XL/SELECT) driver 20%... Just think about what you paid, how much of a pain (or how expensive) it would have been to drive yourself, if there was anything extraordinary about the trip and come up with a number.

In most cases (and cars) you get between 20-30 miles per gallon so just tip $2.00 per 20-30 miles. If a hurricane has increased the cost of gas do $3 or $4.00 per 20-30 miles.

Oh and if your driver picks you up in a hurricane or say... during a terrorist attack stop and think about how glad you are to be alive, don't whine about the surge pricing and tip accordingly.
