I've stayed in a variety of Marriott brands this year and I almost never see newspapers anymore. There was a point in time when a WSJ or USAT outside your door was a standard at full-service Marriotts. At SHS it was more likely to be a big stack of USAT in the lobby, although maybe some of them had WSJ.
Granted, I don't particularly care. I know if I badly want one, I can probably find one in the lounge or lobby. But if it's not a systemwide and multi-brand cutback, it's *close* to one. I literally can't remember the last time I opened my door and saw a newspaper sitting there. This even includes a couple New York and DC stays, cities where physical-newspaper-reading is still at least kind of part of the culture.
I kind of assumed that the hotel chains got the papers for free or at a deep discount to pad the circulation stats of the paper, but I have no idea if this was really true.
