Sure, but the rule says that if you're traveling with the kid, whether on the same PNR or not, you're not qualified for the exit row. You're not supposed to be distracted by needing to care for the kid.
From the FAR exclusion section:
(7) The person has:
(i) A condition or responsibilities, such as caring for small children, that might prevent the person from performing one or more of the applicable functions listed in paragraph (d) of this section; or

I've said something to the FA in similar circumstances. Not worth the risk just for the unqualified passenger to have a bit of extra legroom.
