UA likely either has a deal with Air China to take the UA HGH pax (like with NZ when they seasonally canceled AUK flights) or needs to rebook them on an individual basis. Typically, they will be more flexible with revenue tickets than award, since unless a partner opens award space, they typically won't rebook on OAL, even within *.
OP will have the choice to either cancel the ticket comletelt and rebook on their own, or work with UA to get rebooked on an alternate connection (that's the 'via PEK' option) or to book onto UA metal nearby where they can open saver space (that's the PVG options). There is some info. In the HGH cancels in the HGH thread.
Cancelations aren't fun for anyone, and oftentimes it's a matter of picking the least worst option (though sometimes, will give an opportunity if you are flexible to get a better routing, etc.). Before deciding, OP may want to look at other options on their own and seeing if canceling and taking that might be better for them.
bus from hgh to pvg airport then gum-hnl-sfo, maybe?
