I've been flying for over 30 years and I've yet to see the Y seat I would pick before a J seat. YMMV, of course.

Only a dilettante would say something like "good Y is better than the worst J".
I have been on non-UA international Y flights with not enough pitch that were sheer torture, and even the premium Y products are lousy for sleeping.
As far as the neighbor with a chaw cup-big deal! The smell of coffee gives me nausea and yet, somehow, I survive the ubiquitous presence of this toxic elixir. At least chaw juice has a slightly pleasant odor-and no, I have never used any tobacco products.
